How do I get filming permission?

You can apply for a filming permit through the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Singhadurbar, Kathmandu. You can hire a fixer or a local coordinator to apply for the filming permit on your behalf prior to your arrival in Nepal.

What documents should I submit for film permit?

The required documents are as follows:

  1. A letter made by the assigned local coordinator, informing the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology of the purpose of applying for the shooting permit.
  2. An assignment letter made by the foreign filmmaker, showing that they have already chosen and hired a local coordinator.
  3. Application form provided.
  4. Storyboard/ Synopsis stating briefly about the film.
  5. A schedule of filming in Nepal specifying period of filming and shooting locations.
  6. Name-list, passport numbers, positions and arrival dates of all foreign film crews.

The process will be completed within 10-15 working days depending on the type of film requirement.
Who can apply for a shooting permit at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology?
TV commercials, documentaries, music videos, TV programs, feature films, mini- series, TV serials, etc. that do not contain any misrepresentation or negative message about Nepal, its culture and people can apply for National Filming Permit at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Do I strictly need to get permission before shooting in Nepal?
Yes, you do. Shooting without a permit is a violation of the law.
Which part of the government grants a shooting/filming permit?
Ministry of Communication and Information Technology grants the filming permit. The one door system allows filmmakers and crew to get permission from other departments and ministries through Ministry of Communication.
How do I apply for a drone permit?
First you need to apply for a National Filming Permit. Fixer after application files additional application in the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Defense for the drone Permit.
What documents do I need to submit while applying for a drone permit?
  1. Picture of Serial Number on the drone.
  2. Any registered documents.
  3. Tax invoice of Drone purchase.
  4. Custom Clearance Document.
  5. Scan copy of visa of the drone owner/operator.
How do I know if my film will obtain the permission to shoot?
Permission will be issued after your script has been studied. If it is not acceptable, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will give you the reasons. Whether you agree to make changes to your script is entirely up to you.
Who is a Liaison Officer and what is their role?
The duty of the Ministry’s representative or Liaison Officer is to make sure that what is actually being shot has followed the script that has been approved by the Ministry. In case the scenes vary from the script, the representative is there to advise as to whether it is possible to shoot those scenes or not.
Do YouTubers get film permits?

Yes, YouTubers are allowed to apply for a filming permit. This permit allows YouTubers to shoot and operate drones in any parts of Nepal excluding the restricted areas. There are no subsidies yet for YouTubers or Vloggers while filming in Nepal.
